Michigan farmers are good caretakers of the land, water and natural resources around them. A program called the Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program (MAEAP) helps them to take proactive steps toward assessing their farm operation for potential environmental risks.
This comprehensive, voluntary, proactive program is designed to reduce farmers’ legal and environmental risks through a three-phase process:
- education;
- farm-specific risk assessment and practice implementation; and
- on-farm verification that ensures the farmer has implemented environmentally sound practices.
The program’s four systems — Farmstead, Cropping, Livestock, and the newly developed Forest, Wetlands and Habitat System — each examine different aspects of the farm.
Farm Bureau Insurance supports farmers working through the program and achieving verification by offering a discount to the liability portion of their Farmowners Policy.
